Classroom Management
By treating my students with respect and understanding as well as encouraging students to follow my example, I establish a comfortable environment in which students are able to learn. I believe in a classroom that is structured through a set of expectations that the students create together in the beginning of the year. The expectations for behavior that the students have determined will be clearly stated consistently throughout the day to ensure there are no misunderstandings. To prevent misbehavior, I will clearly establish all routines in the beginning of the year, with positive reinforcement to those routines as the year continues on. My curriculum consists of inquiry based activities that are relevant to student's lives and are tailored to their individual needs, insuring that students are constantly engaged. My curriculum will be differentiated to meet the needs of every learner by having group and individual activities every lesson. In many activities, students will be given the privilege and responsibility to choose how to solve a problem, the way in which they display their understanding, and where to sit around the room. Throughout the year, as I get to know the students better, I will make adaptations to create the environment the students need to learn and grow. |
AwardsThe extrinsic rewards that are given in my classroom are solely based on personal needs. I do not start off the year with a class wide reward system, but rather personalize it as I get to know each and every student.
In the beginning of the year, the class will choose a goal to work on for the trimester. At the end of each day, the students will discuss the day and decide as a group if they met their goal that day. If they met their goal, they will earn a puzzle piece. When they complete the puzzle, the students will vote on a class wide reward. I do believe that one of the best rewards is praising students for putting in effort, thinking outside the box, and participating in class through positive reinforcement and recognition in the hopes the students gain intrinsic motivation. |
ConsequencesSimilar to rewards, consequences for students are specified according to students own individual needs. I prefer to privately talk with students who are not following the expectation during class to discuss the reason why the student acted in such a way as well as how the student will act in the future. If the problem is consistent, then a phone call home will be made to collaborate on a solution for managing the student's behavior.

Teaching TheoryThe teaching theory that I demonstrate in my classroom is the Nurtured Heart Approach. In this theory, teachers transform negative behaviors into positive ones, creates relationships with students and their families, and motivates students through positive reinforcement.
